Installation Instructions for Windows users
System Requirements
- 256 MB RAM (512 MB preferred)
- Windows 2000, XP, or later
There are two options for installing GelBuddy on computers running Microsoft Windows. The easiest
and most reliable method is to use the all-in-one installer, which will install GelBuddy, shortcut
icons, and all necessary Java components. Alternatively, you may choose to install the generic JAR file and
Windows batch file which will start GelBuddy using Java components already installed on your system.
All-In-One Installer Instructions
Installs GelBuddy, shortcut icons, reference images, Java JRE version 1.4.2_08 and Java Advanced Imaging library version v1.1.2. Java and the Java Advanced Imaging library are copyright Sun Microsystems.
In the directions below, "GelBuddyInstallerxxxxxxxx.exe" refers to the most recent version of GelBuddy available from the GelBuddy download page.
Step 1: Install GelBuddy and related components
- Review the Java JRE and JAI License Agreements and click on your browser's Back button to return to this page.
- Read the license agreement and follow the directions on the GelBuddy download page to download GelBuddyxxxxxxxx.exe.
- Run GelBuddyInstallerxxxxxxxx.exe and enter the information requested by the installer program.
You may delete the installer program after installation is complete.
Step 2: Run GelBuddy
- Use the Windows Start Menu (Start/All Programs/GelBuddy) to run GelBuddy. To view the reference images and markups, use the GelBuddy menu command
File/Open Gel Markup, enter the directory name \Program Files\GelBuddy\Data, click on the Open button, and select the desired example directory and XML file.

You can uninstall GelBuddy and all related components by using the "Add or Remove Programs" function of the Windows Control Panel.
Generic JAR file and Windows Batch File Installation Instructions
Use of the GelBuddy generic JAR file and Windows batch file requires:
- Java version 1.4.2 or later
- Java Advanced Imaging Library 1.1.2 or later
Step 1: Update your Java VM
Step 2: Install Java Advanced Imaging for Windows
Step 3: Install GelBuddy
- Read the license agreement and follow the directions on the GelBuddy download page to download GelBuddyxxxxxxxx.zip.
- Create a directory in a convenient location on your computer.
- Open GelBuddyxxxxxxxx.zip. Drag the two files (
gelbuddy.bat and tgat.jar) to the directory you just created.
- Close GelBuddyxxxxxxxx.zip.
- While depressing the ALT key, drag
gelbuddy.bat from the folder you created to the desktop to create a shortcut to gelbuddy.bat
- Double-click on the shortcut you just created to run GelBuddy. The GelBuddy startup screen should appear almost immediately. If not, see the installation issues page for assistance.
