To become self-employed, you must register with HMRC. They will expect you to complete a tax return at the end of every financial year, which is on April 5th. You must detail all aspects of your income and expenditure and declare any profits. The tax office will issue you a demand for payment of taxes if you are liable for any.

You will also need to pay National Insurance if you expect to make more than six thousand pounds profit in your first year. Even if you make below that, you can pay it voluntarily; it has an impact on benefits you might be entitled to if you need them in the future.
