A metaphase I-arrested spindle in a live Drospohila oocyte decorated with the Ncd microtubule motor protein fused to the green fluorescent protein (GFP) from the jellyfish. Ncd functions to focus microtubules associated with the meiotic chromosomes into poles in the acentriolar Drosophila oocyte spindles, replacing the function of centrosomes. Mutants cause highly abnormal spindles with multiple or diffuse poles. For further information, see Endow, S.A. & Komma, D.J. 1997. J Cell Biol. 137, 1321-1336. |
